Kiruna Wagon's Dump Wagon System Finals at 2017 Swedish Steel Award

Kiruna Wagon's dump wagon system reached the finals in the Swedish Swedish Prize 2017: Kiruna Wagon made it to the finals at the Swedish Swedish Prize 2017 by developing the innovative Helix Dumper wagon solution, which is highly durable and much more efficient than other wagons sold in the market.

The Swedish Steel Award is an international award aiming to appreciate the arts of engineering and innovation in the steel industry. Kiruna Wagon from Sweden is one of the four companies that made it to the finals for this year's award, which will find its owner at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 11, 2017.

“Our client found a small design and wanted to turn it into a big and special wagon concept. There were many challenges to overcome, such as reaching 100 tonnes of load capacity and keeping the wagon light, ”said Kiruna Wagon Managing Director Fredrik Kangas.

The resulting Helix Dumper was a lightweight wagon structure with a high load capacity and twice the speed of the other systems, offering an evacuation speed of 25.000 per hour.

In the design, high-strength steels have been widely used in the wagon structure as well as the top rail of the wagon and the hardeners around the wagon body. Wear-resistant steel is used in the two arches in the discharge area.

“Helix Dumper is designed to minimize wear; We believe that our material selection is also optimal in this regard, ”says Kangas.

Compared to other systems, a complete evacuation system for Helix remains at 1/7 of the cost of a rotary wagon. In addition, Helix uses some of the potential energy of the mine to push the wagon forward during evacuation. In this way, no extra energy is required; much less dust is generated and there is almost no noise.

The jury determined Kiruna Wagon as a finalist in the 2017 Swedish Steel Award for the following reasons:

“Kiruna Wagon has developed an innovative dump wagon system for long-distance rail transport and efficient evacuation of minerals. The use of advanced high-strength and wear-resistant steels allowed the design of very light wagons combined with a fixed Helix terminal for rotary discharge on the go. With its almost doubling discharge rate, the Helix system offers a superior solution than any conventional solution and solves many problems with adhesive aggregates. The terminal system offers an extremely high cost efficiency in terms of both investment and operation. ”

For nearly 20 years, the Swedish Steel Awards have appreciated and rewarded small and large companies as well as institutions and individuals who have developed a method or product that uses high strength steel to its full potential. The winning institution will be awarded a sculpture made by sculptor Jörg Jeschke, as well as 100.000 Swiss Kroner cash rewards, which SSAB encourages donation to a charity chosen by the award winner.

  1. tonnage, less tare, quality material. low cost …… .. these features should be developed by taking the example of Tudemsas Tülomsaş and put into practice.
