Suburban shortage of public transport in Izmir

The suburban shortage in İzmir public transportation: A strike started at İZBAN A.Ş., which operates a suburban area between Aliağa and Torbalı, which is an important pillar of urban transportation in İzmir, due to the disagreement in collective agreement negotiations.

The difficulties faced by the people due to the strike were tried to be overcome with additional buses, subways and ferries. There was no major problem in the city. Hüseyin Eryüz, Head of the Branch of the Railroad Work Union, said, "If our employer opens his heart to our demands, we will continue our work together happily, hand in hand, from where we left off."

340 personnel of İZBAN A.Ş., the joint company of TCDD and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, stopped work as of Tuesday, November 8, after the authorized union Demiryol İş decided to strike. Due to the strike of machinists, station operators, toll booth workers, and maintenance workers, there were no departments operating in the IZBAN line except the electronic announcement system in the system.

THE PASSENGERS HAVE CHALLENGE
Passengers, unaware of the strike, learned about the strike decision from the security guards at their stations. With the instructions of the security guards, it was sent to the areas where the bus services were made. At these moments, some passengers in a rush to catch up reacted to not being informed themselves. In the Izmir Metro, directive announcements were made so that the passengers would not suffer due to the İZBAN strike. In the announcement made about Halkapınar and Hilal Stations, which are the intersection of the metro and İZBAN line and the transfer point, it was reported that these two stations are closed and they can transfer to the buses that are lifted from Halkapınar Station to the İZBAN route. For this reason, the accumulation that may occur especially at Halkapınar Station was partially prevented. Passengers were able to continue their journey by bus. In addition to ESHOT and İZULAŞ, İZDENİZ started to organize additional flights throughout the day in order to prevent the people of İzmir from being affected negatively by the strike. Despite the precautions, many Izmir residents, unaware of the strike, were late to their destination. In addition, additional measures taken in regions with a high passenger density significantly prevented trouble. Transportation was carried out largely without interruption.

"OUR EMPLOYER OPEN YOUR EYES" REQUEST
Türk-İş 3rd Regional Representative and Demir Yol İş Union managers and members of Demir Yol İş Union, to which the striking workers are affiliated, wanted to make a press statement in front of the Alsancak Station. When the police did not allow the press release to be made at 08.00:XNUMX, the group dispersed. Thereupon, Demir Yol İş Union İzmir Branch Minister Hüseyin Eryüz made a short statement. Eryüz said that negotiations with the İZBAN management continue until late at night, but they could not agree on wages and bonuses.

“At 04.00:340, the staff left their workplaces. Strike lookouts started their guard. We made the decision to strike because of our friends' financial difficulties and their wages close to the poverty line. 105 of the 3 employees receive the minimum wage. It is said that we want a high rate of raise. It may be like that in proportion, but it does not reflect on wages. A 10 percent increase in the salary of 300 thousand TL is 1600 TL. It is 160 TL at 1616 TL. Most of our friends get XNUMX TL. "

Expressing that they want the strike to end happily, Hüseyin Eryüz said, “If our employer opens his heart and eyes to our demands, we will continue our work together happily together. The strike is a means, not an end, for the conflict between us to reach peace. May Allah not be ashamed. May our veterans be blessed. I hope it will lead to good results. As a union, we are behind and supporters of this strike with all our strength ”.

WRITTEN EXPLANATION FROM İZBAN
Meanwhile, in the written statement made by İZBAN A.Ş., “İZBAN A.Ş. The collective bargaining agreement negotiations between the Demiryol-İş Union and the Demiryol-İş Union since June continued until late tonight. In order to reach a compromise in the last round of negotiations and to prevent the troubled environment that may be experienced in the city and our employees during the strike period, our institution once again made an additional salary increase proposal by forcing all the conditions. The Demiryol-İş Union, not accepting our last offer, insisted on its decision to strike ”.

KOCAOĞLU: PERCENT 15 TIME NOT ACCEPTED
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu answered questions about the strike that started in İZBAN A.Ş., in which TCDD and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality are partners. Kocaoğlu said that since İZBAN is a newly established company, they think that the requests of employees who start at low wages, as in every company, are justified to a certain extent as TCDD and the Metropolitan Municipality. Kocaoğlu gave information about their negotiations with the union. Kocaoğlu explained that if inflation is accepted as 8 percent on a round calculation, they offered the union a 4 percent increase over the inflation rate by 12 points, and that after this unaccepted proposal, they met with TCDD officials on Monday and increased it by 3 points to 15 percent. Stating that they sent the 15 percent offer to the union as a result of the negotiations with the Minister and Undersecretary of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications for this proposal, Kocaoğlu said, "But the union made up a figure of 16.5 percent."

NO EXAMPLE OF THE 15 PERCENT OFFER
Mayor Kocaoğlu said that the 15 percent wage increase offered to the union was not given by the companies of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Stating that no more than 17% contract has been made for nearly 9.5 thousand contracted personnel, Kocaoğlu said:
“This is a figure above the best in our opinion. Trade unionists and my colleagues working in İZBAN should evaluate this in this way. By accepting a 15 percent increase, they will minimize the unjust treatment of the people of Izmir, and work peace will be achieved for them. and is an important time to be higher than the 15 percent hike conditions in Turkey. For example, there are no state institutions, neither the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality nor the private sector. "

TRANSPORTATION BY BUS AND BOATS
Explaining that they do not want İZBAN employees to be victims, but since this morning, ESHOT, İZULAŞ and İZDENİZ companies have been able to carry the people of İzmir to their jobs and schools without any problems from the first day with the support of buses and ferries, Kocaoğlu said:
“Tomorrow we will fix the hitches even more. In the coming days, I think the transportation will be on the right track. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has a strong bus, ferry, metro and İZBAN system. When there is a weakness in one of them, we have the power to support the other with the other and realize mass transportation without affecting life to a great extent. "

'TAKING THE ROAD EARLY' PROPOSAL FOR IZMIR PEOPLE
Addressing the people of İzmir, Mayor Kocaoğlu made a recommendation and request during the strike process. Proposing an earlier departure, Kocaoğlu said, “It will be good for them to spread the traffic density in the morning, both for us to do our transportation duty and for them to reach their jobs. This is my advice and invitation, ”he said.
Kocaoğlu asked that the 15 percent hike offered to the union for İZBAN personnel to compare with the increases received by the employees in both private sector and official institutions, and said, "If the employees and our tradesmen compare with the increases in their income, they will understand better what we give and how we sacrifice."

CONTRACT IS MADE IF 15 PERCENT SIGNED
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu said that they offered the 15 percent offer before the strike, but the door was open. Kocaoglu stating that the union could be made to come to sign the contract on condition that the proposed 15 percent hike, "give a raise than that would disrupt the entire balance in Turkey. The union and your employees will live and see. We will realize mass transportation. "It will be in their favor if they accept the 15 percent increase as soon as possible."

THE CLOSURE OF AWARENESS IN AN AGREEMENT IS NOT POSSIBLE
Kocaoğlu also evaluated the demands of İZBAN workers regarding the closure of the difference between the salaries received by Metro employees and said:
“İZBAN was established in 2008. İzmir Metro A.Ş. A company of 17 years. Of course, as seniority increases, wages will converge. The figure we will give in the subway contract will be 5-6 points below this figure. By giving more in İZBAN, it is possible for the wages to reach those of metro employees over time. However, it is not possible to close the distance in a collective agreement. "
