İZBAN workers in the strike await support from Izmir

İZBAN workers in the strike are awaiting support from the residents of İzmir: While the İZBAN strike enters its fourth day, flights can only be made with subcontractors between Aliağa and Çiğli at wider intervals.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and TCDD officials continue to aggravate the people of IZMAN who do not accept the wages and social rights demands of the employees. While the İZBAN strike enters its fourth day, flights can only be made with subcontractor companies between Aliağa and Çiğli. Urban bus and ferry traffic in the morning and evening is still busy and lock.

The strike on the 110-kilometer İZBAN rail system, which connects the north and south of İzmir and is the main line of urban public transportation, has entered its fourth day. The strike initiated by the workers after the collective bargaining agreement between the employer officials and the Demiryol İş Union, which is organized in TCDD and the joint company of Izmir metropolitan municipality İZBAN A.Ş., did not come to a conclusion, continues with full participation.

Due to the strike of machinists, station operators, box office workers and maintenance workers, while the voyages stopped completely in İZBAN for the first two days, İZBAN officials commissioned the subcontractor company. The mechanics retired from TCDD and working in a subcontractor company started flights between Aliağa and Çiğli. The trips can be made reciprocally every 20 minutes. On the other hand, the Metropolitan Municipality canceled some additional flights between Aliağa and Çiğli. Strike scouts at the İZBAN General Directorate in Çiğli and Menemen, Karşıyaka, Halkapınar, Alsancak, Şirinyer, ESBAŞ and Cumaovası stations.

Stating that they work in the longest line of the country but get the lowest wage compared to other colleagues, İZBAN workers want a wage that is enough to live decently. While 304 of 105 İZBAN workers on strike receive around the minimum wage, the average wage of the workers is around 1800 TL.

Stating that the 15 percent increase rate of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu does not reflect the reality, the actual rate is 12 percent, and the 22 percent increase in demand is not high considering the real salary they receive. Another demand of workers is to gradually increase their bonuses from 70 days to 90 days. İZBAN workers continue to call for support and understanding to the people of İzmir.

Mucahid Yavuz, one of the workers, stated that their calls were not only to Izmir Metropolitan Municipality but also to TCDD, the other partner of İZBAN. “We hope that they will return to us as soon as possible. This problem cannot continue like this. As you can see, the suffering of people is obvious. We do not want to use it as a trump card. We did not have such an intention anyway. Not calling until this time will not mean they won't want to be called. They cannot ignore us. We hope it will be positively resolved as soon as possible. We intend to continue the strike we are right. We will not give up. This is now an irreversible road. Our gains will also hope for people like us working in Turkey, "he said.

Referring to the involvement of subcontractor workers, Yavuz used the following statements: “The subcontractor case is not new. Subcontracted workers have been working since the establishment of İZBAN. If 80 or 90 subcontracted workers come, they will not be able to break our resistance. We will continue the strike until the end. The workers have full faith in the strike. They pay higher wages to those workers. If the people of Izmir support our strike and indicate that they are with us against our employers, a faster solution will be provided ”.
