New jungles break down

New jungles were broken: the Byzantine-era wooden breakers were found to be shattered during the excavations of the Eurasia Tunnel Project.
In the ongoing works in Yenikapı within the scope of the Eurasia Project in Istanbul, wooden knitting breakwaters were found in the world that were the continuation of Theodosius Port, which was unearthed in 2006. According to the news of Ömer Erbil from Hürriyet Newspaper, these breakwaters were smashed with construction machinery yesterday, despite the decision of the Protection Board to be removed by scientific methods!
During the Marmaray metro excavations in Yenikapı in 2006, Theodosius Port was discovered and 36 sunken archaeological methods were removed. Archaeologists had made scientific discussions on the port's hinge since that date, but the location of the hinge could not be determined. Within the scope of the Istanbul Bosphorus Tube Passage Tunnel project, the wall structure was determined as wooden molds on land during the intersection works in Aksaray-Yenikapı.

During the excavations carried out by the Istanbul Archeology Museum, it was revealed that the wall was the breakwater of Theodosius Harbor, which was thought to have been built in the 5th century AD. This port, which is protected against the dominant wind of the Sea of Marmara, was built at the mouth of Bayrampaşa Creek (Lykos), the only stream in the city wall during the Byzantine period. The port's hinge is estimated to be 1500 years old.
In ancient sources, prehistoric period jungle, wooden crates prepared on land filled with mortar and stone is said to be launched into the sea. It is known that this system, which is quite expensive, was built with the support of emperors. However, a single example of this technique has not survived in the world.

It was the first time that a solid breakwater was found in Yenikapı with all its details. However, it was decided to remove the unique cultural heritage by the decision of Istanbul Number 2 Renewal Areas Conservation Board. In the decision, it was said: “There is no harm in removing the wall of the wooden molded crate wall technique with scientific methods provided that it is displayed again, under the supervision of expert conservators, the dismantled woods are placed in water tanks, pools before the deterioration process, and the conserved nails are preserved by preserving them. meter part of the project was taken under protection for display and the breakwater from the excavation works were processed in the urban design project and conveyed to our establishment. ”
