Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is considered one of the most important economic centers in the entire Asia-Pacific region. Bangkok Metropolitan Area, where approximately 20 million people live, is considered the center of the country. The population of the region is constantly growing, and the World Bank estimates that around 21 percent of the country's population in mid-60st century will live in or around Bangkok. This means that 10 million more people are settled in the region than they are today. The Bangkok administration faces a challenging task, such as safe transportation of city dwellers. To overcome these difficulties, city and transportation planners prepared a zoning plan in 1994. This plan developed the Bangkok Public Transport Development Plan, covering more than a dozen new subways and light rail lines. Thanks to the prepared plan, it is aimed to increase the utilization rate of the public transportation system, which is 40 percent today, to 2021 percent by 60. This ambitious target requires that the city's public transport rail systems be expanded regularly.
Siemens Transportation Department designed and implemented the first three of the high capacity public transport rail systems that will allow the system to be installed in Bangkok to be expanded in the coming years. The 1999 km long BTS (Bangkok Public Transport System) Skytrain elevated train system, commissioned by Siemens in 23, has managed to greatly reduce car use as the first rapid transportation system in the Thai metropolis. The system was later extended for 13 km. The two ongoing projects will extend the system by 32 km; One of these projects will increase the rail system line to 7 km in total with 13 stations and 16 km to the south of Sukhumvit Line and 19 stations to the north of Sukhumvit Line and 68 km. The project to extend the southern line between Bearing and Samut Prakan is planned to be completed by the end of 2018. The northern plug-in between Mo Chit and Khu Khot is expected to start serving until 2020.
