International Snow Workshop in Palandöken

International Snow Workshop in Palandöken: The world's leading meteorology, climate and snow experts came together at the Palandöken Ski Center, whose star shines day by day.

The world's leading meteorology, climate and snow experts came together at Palandöken Ski Center, whose star shines every day. A large number of scientists attended the "Harmosnow Workshop" held at the Dedeman Resord Hotel. Anadolu University in Turkey Member of the Management Board of the Project Assoc. Dr. Aynur Şensoy Şorman stated that there will be meetings and field studies within the scope of the event covering 28 European countries. Stating that the project is a European network for harmonizing snow observations for the benefit of climate change scenarios, hydrology and digital weather forecast, Assoc. Dr. Şorman stated that they are honored to organize this event in Erzurum, which is the most beautiful place where snow activities can be carried out. Şorman said: “We would like to express our gratitude to our Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Sekmen for his close interest in hosting. There are 28 European countries in this project. This work is an integrated activity. We organize a workshop within the framework of this event. In our workshop, there are both state institutions and universities that contribute to this organization and the presentations of the countries that are members of this COST Project. Turkey represents mountainous areas in Europe. In this representation, Erzurum is the most beautiful region in terms of representation because it is a snowy region and a mountainous area. Representatives from many European countries and officials from our public institutions will participate and experience a shared experience. Since the early 2000s, various scientific projects have been carried out in order to establish Snow Observation Stations in and around Erzurum, all of which have been carried out in cooperation with state institutions in protocols. Universities also pioneered theoretically in this sense and we were together in practical applications. Information about snow is received from the stations established, snow depth, snow-water equivalent… ”

"TURKEY PROJECT ON AN IMPORTANT PLACE was"

Assoc. Dr. Şorman, Turkey reported that an important place in the said project. Şorman continued his words as follows: “Our aim is; How much flow is generated from this falling snow, how can we estimate it and how can we ensure that the flows we estimate are used in the operation of dams? This is our whole aim. We aim to make daily and seasonal forecasts, so that we can use and manage our water resources in the most efficient way. Turkey is located in the project's board of directors. This is important because if he does not sit on the board of directors, he cannot be in working groups. It has an important activity for him. This event was a good activity both to promote the work in our country and to bring experts from Europe here, and an opportunity to promote our country. Turkey has had the sense to compare these measurements in all dimensions of business are at the stage of both satellite products have the sense to estimate how much water could come with both hydraulic model. I can easily say that Turkey is located in each leg of the project. At the end of the project, especially the harmonization of measurement stages in different countries is planned. Because each country has its own techniques and tools. By using them together in the field, an experience will be shared, the data collected will be discussed, and a booklet will be prepared at the end by comparing these methods. So we will see what kind of harmonization work we can do across Europe.

WHY IS THE MEASUREMENT OF SNOWS AND RAIN WATER IMPORTANT?

Near East University Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Ali Ünal Şorman made the following assessment about the international event held in Erzurum: “Since 1995, we have started to measure profit with our students in the Karasu Basin, which is the Upper Euphrates Basin. We both measure meteorological data and make snowfalls. We transfer these measured observations and meteorology data to both institutions and universities via satellite in real time. After that, by putting these measured data into a model, we determine the flows that may come to the dams on the Euphrates River after March, volumetrically and graphically. How will this work for us? We know that at least 60 percent of the active volume of Keban Dam comes from snowmelt and rain. If we can determine the available snow covered areas in these mountains and determine the amount of snow / water in these snow covered areas in advance, then we will have the opportunity to predict the expected flows and generate the maximum energy from Keban, Karakaya, Atatürk and other dams according to these currents . Fırat has an international interest. We call this a hydropolitic basin. The studies that can be carried out in this basin will prevent the 'Water Wars' that everybody is waiting for in the coming years, God forbid, and if we can ensure our own interests, the use of water, the production of electrical energy, and the better irrigation of the Harran Plain, we will both increase our products and increase our dependence on natural gas. we reduce it. Therefore, this region in the Upper Euphrates Basin is one of our sine qua non. An important international event is held in Erzurum. In this activity, we carry out a similar meeting for the first time in Turkey with experts who work in various European meteorological organization. 28 scientists attend this meeting. As such meetings will continue until 2018, our country is also represented in Europe. as well as other European countries and Turkey will gain through this kind of communication that Turkey will have seen how it has potential.
