Electric trams, which are nostalgic for Istanbulites, celebrate their 102nd anniversary. A century has passed since the introduction of electric trams, which made their first voyage in 1914 and served Istanbul residents for years. IETT General Directorate celebrated the anniversary of the establishment of the veteran trams, which have been in service for more than 100 years, by cutting a cake.

The trams, whose name became identical with Beyoğlu, made their first voyage on February 11, 1914. The tram, which became one of the indispensables of Istiklal Street, succumbed to developing technologies and urbanization, and said goodbye to its passengers by making its last voyage on the European side in 1961 and on the Anatolian side in 1966. Later, the tram, which was symbolically re-run on Istiklal Street, became its current line.

ELECTRIC TRAILERS

When the operation of horse-drawn trams, considered the milestone of public transportation in Istanbul, was terminated in 1914, the 45-year tradition came to an end. In 1913, Turkey's first electricity factory was established in Silahtarağa, and on February 11, 1914, electric tram operation was started by giving the first current to the tram network. In 1933, for the 10th anniversary celebration ceremonies of the Republic, the tram and bus fleet (320 tram + 4 buses) was put into service in Istanbul by the order of Atatürk.

In 1955, the Anatolian Side Üsküdar and Neighborhood Tramway Management (Üsküdar – Kadıköy People's Tramways Company) was transferred to IETT with all its facilities. Electric trams, which have been serving on both sides of the city for fifty years, went to the last time on the European Side on August 12, 1961 and on the Anatolian Side on November 14, 1966, saying that they could not keep up with the ever increasing speed of the city. Trolleybuses were put into operation instead. In 1989, the old wagons in the museum were restored and the electric tram was brought into service again for a symbolic and even nostalgic purpose. Thus, today's nostalgic tram started operating on the Taksim-Tunnel line.
