After the METRO in Izmir, the tram hit the tradesmen: The tram constructions, which turned the traffic of Izmir into a tangle, hit the tradesmen of Bostanlı the biggest blow. Cengiz Topel Street shopkeepers, who lost their customers due to their work, started to close the shutters. Many businesses that had difficulties in paying high shop rents found the solution to recruit staff.
Construction started by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality last year Karşıyaka The tram hit the shopkeepers on Cengiz Topel Avenue in Bostanlı. Tradesmen, who have been longing for customers due to the roads being closed to traffic for months, started to lower their shutters. While the owners of the venues said that there was a 60 percent decrease in turnover and they were unable to pay the rents, some venues hung sub-sales or rental signs on their doors. Meanwhile, many homeowners living on the street started to sell their houses and settle in other districts. The rents of workplaces in Bostanlı vary between 10 thousand lira and 25 thousand lira depending on the size. However, tradesmen cannot pay these rents due to prolonged and months-long work. Many tradesmen, on the other hand, have to recruit personnel to pay the rents.
Famous brands left
Some well-known brands that could not do business due to tram works started to leave Cengiz Topel Street. Turkey's branches in many parts of the international restaurant chain recently closed its restaurant here. Stating that the work that was not done during the summer had a negative impact on the winter, the tradesman said, “Our main job is winter. Because everybody goes on vacation in summer. If this tram work had been done in the summer, it would have been completed by now. But, we are experiencing great victimization right now, ”he said. The tradesman said that instead of entering Cengiz Topel Street, the line could go to the beach next to Bostanlı Beşikçioğlu Mosque, “But because there was Yasemin Café operated by the Metropolitan Municipality, he preferred to pass the line here. "If he went along the beach, he would be victimized by neither traffic, pedestrians, nor tradesmen like us," he said.
'Tradesmen and citizens are victims'
Mesut Güleroğlu, head of the Izmir Chamber of Real Estate Agents, said, “Some businesses in Bostanlı, which is one of the most luxurious districts of Izmir due to the works, cannot even pay their rent and close their shops. Roads are closed to traffic and circulation has naturally decreased. In this case, shopkeepers have difficulty standing, ”he said.
What did they say?
Coffee Mania-Ahmet Altun: It was a big blow to us for months because of the tram. Customers here usually come with their vehicles. But no one comes because the road is closed to traffic. There is a 60 drop in turnover. We had to lay off the 12. Victims of all trades. Even the great famous brands have left.
Black Jack-İsmail Daşyaka: Our business season is the winter season. We wanted the work to end in summer. Our winter season was interrupted. Not a wholesaler. Customers cannot come with their vehicles. Roads in mud. We have a lot of damage.
Mavra Restaurant-Görkem Özer: It was unnecessary for the tram to pass through Cengiz Topel Street. Normally he could go to the beach next to Bostanlı Beşikçioğlu Mosque. Traffic was turned upside down here. We lost our customers. We have become unable to pay our rents. Even famous brands are closing it. We are in a difficult situation as tradesmen.
