'Project of the Year' award from ITA to Eurasia Transition Project

'Project of the Year' award from ITA to the Eurasia Transition Project: The Eurasia Transition Project was awarded the 'ITA Major Project of the Year' award in the Major Projects category of the ITA International Tunneling Awards.

The Eurasia Crossing Project (Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing), which connects the Asian and European continents with a highway tunnel under the sea floor for the first time, is the first ITA International Tunneling Awards organized by the ITA - International Tunnel and Underground Structures Association, one of the world's most respected organizations in engineering and tunneling. He was awarded the 'Project of the Year' (ITA Major Project of the Year) award in the Major Projects category. The Eurasia Crossing Project has become a groundbreaking example of success in world tunneling with its intense innovation, advanced technology and strong engineering know-how.

The ITA International Tunneling Awards, which is considered as the most important union in the world in the field of tunneling and organized by the International Tunneling and Underground Structures Association (ITA), whose headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland, found their owners at a ceremony held on November 19. As a result of the evaluation made among 9 applications in 110 categories worldwide, the Eurasia Transition Project made it to the finals in the 'Project of the Year' (ITA Major Project of the Year) race in the Big Projects category. In the last evaluation made by the jury, Eurasia Transition was awarded the 'Great Project of the Year' among three projects. Project Manager Naim İşli and Assistant Project Manager Jin Moo Lee received the award on behalf of Yapı Merkezi and SK E&C companies, which are carrying out the Eurasia Transition Project. The project presentation for the participants was made by the Chief of TBM Technical Office, Öncü Gönenç.

Eurasia Crossing breaks ground in tunneling

The Eurasia Transition Project, which was tendered by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication General Directorate of Infrastructure Investments (AYGM) on the Kazlıçeşme-Göztepe line with the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, and both investment and construction works are carried out by Yapı Merkezi and SK Engineering & Construction. The 3.344-meter tunnel digging work carried out under the Bosphorus was completed last August and announced a breakthrough in tunneling. The tunnel boring works, initiated on 19 April 2014 with the participation of then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, were completed with a ceremony held with the participation of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu on 22 August 2015.

The most important stage of the Eurasia Crossing Project, which consists of three main sections of 14,6 kilometers in total, is the 3,4 kilometer-long Bosphorus Crossing. The world's most advanced TBM technology was used for the Bosphorus Crossing. TBM used in this project ranks 33.3st in the world with 2 kW / m1 cutting head power, 12nd with 2 bar design pressure and 13,7th with 6 m excavation diameter among tunnel boring machines. In the tunnel, which consists of a total of 1.672 rings, seismic rings were installed at two separate points in order to increase the durability of the tunnel against a major earthquake. Seismic bracelets, which are specially designed and produced after their success has been proven by testing in laboratories, considering the current diameter and seismic activity level, TBM is the first application in the world in the tunneling industry. To carry out the design and construction of the project, Avrasya Tunnel Management Construction and Investment Inc., established by Yapı Merkezi and SK E&C companies. (ATAŞ) will also operate the tunnel for 24 years and 5 months.

No expenditure is made from public resources for project investment. The financing of the project is provided by loans provided by ATAŞ and the capital provided by Yapı Merkezi and SK E&C companies. With the completion of the operation period, the Eurasia Transition will be transferred to the public. The project is planned to be put into operation at the end of 2016.
