TMMOB: 3. flight security at airport

TMMOB: There is no flight safety at the 3rd airport. TMMOB Istanbul Provincial Coordination Board said in its report on the 3rd airport, “Reducing the project level of the airport, the tender of which was completed, from 105 meters to 70 meters, will render this airport inoperable. Because landing-take-off is not possible in terms of land, according to international flight safety criteria, from the runways to be built at 70 meters altitude. ”
Union of Turkish Chambers of Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) Istanbul Provincial Coordination Board (IKK) within the Ministry of Map and Cadastre, Environment, Geological Engineers and City Planners Chamber Istanbul Branches of the working group 3. shared their technical report about the airport with the public.
The press conference held at the Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers, TMMOB İKK sözcüSü Süleyman Solmaz, retired faculty member Professor at the Department of Transportation, Yıldız Technical University. Dr. Zerrin Bayraktar, Yıldız Technical University Environmental Engineering Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Beyza Üstün, member of Chamber of Survey and Cadastre Engineers Selin Bostan attended.
70 at elevation
Stating that the elevation height, which was 105 meters in the airport tender, was reduced to 70 meters after the tender was completed and the construction started, TMMOB İKK sözcüSü Süleyman Solmaz underlined that the amount of filling, which was determined as 105 billion 2 million cubic meters for 500 meters elevation in the EIA report, decreased to 70 million cubic meters at 420 meters elevation.
Solmaz explains the results of this change as follows: “If the airport runways are built according to the altitude of 70 meters, it is not possible according to the evaluations made by the plane engineers and scientists that the plane landings and takeoffs from the south of the airport are not theoretically possible. Either the existing hills will be shaved or the airport must be built according to the elevation of 105 meters, as said at the tender stage.
However, the 3rd Bridge highway passes from the place where the hills to be shaved. In this case, the project elevations of the highway, which has been tendered and under construction, will come to the agenda. Reducing the project level of the airport, the tender of which has been completed, from 105 meters to 70 meters, will render this airport inoperable. Because landing and take-off is not possible from the runways to be built at 70 m altitude, in terms of land, according to international flight safety criteria ”
Airplanes can hit North-Marmara Motorway
Selin Bostan, a member of the Chamber of Survey and Cadastre Engineers, argued in his presentation that planes will not be possible to land and take off if the 2 percent flight slope applied at Atatürk Airport is applied at the 3rd airport.
Bostan stated that if the 8 percent slope applied at Sabiha Gökçen Airport is applied, only a 90-meter rise will be achieved.
Bostan, 70 meters in the case of stay in the north of the runway passing through the North Marmara Highway would create a danger, he said.
Bostan said: The part in the south needs to be completely shaved. However, Northern Marmara Highway passes through the hills in the south. Either when the plane leaves, it will hit the Northern Marmara Highway or it will be shaved, and the height and direction of the Northern Marmara Highway will change ”
“The project is in your hands no matter where you hold it”
Stating that the dominant winds of the Black Sea will be effective in the north of the airport, Bostan said, “The project is in your hands no matter where you hold it. Due to the winds, the technical unit of the Turkish Aeronautical Association has stated that it cannot approve this project at the moment. ”
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, although the 2 year-long birdwatching studies without commencing construction work that says Solmaz, bird-plane collision risks are not evaluated, this situation will increase the risk of aircraft accidents, he said.
“Only possible on paper”
Stating that the construction covering 7650 hectares of land is possible on such a floor only on paper, Solmaz said, “Choosing a better location will lower the project costs and time process”.
Drinking water source of Istanbul is under threat
Stating that the airport project is within the protection areas of the Terkos Dam, which provides a large part of the water for Istanbul, Solmaz stated that the construction activities will lead to pollution in the lake, and the lake will cause a decrease in the amount of water and pollution as a result of the destruction of the rivers in the project area.
Emphasizing that there will be irreversible pollution in Terkos Lake, Alibeyköy Dam and the Riceçi Dam, which is still in the planning stage, Solmaz said, “The new bridge, forest areas and other habitats will be destroyed between the airport and the 3rd bridge planned, Kanal Istanbul, Ağaçlı-Çiftalan.” said.
Professor of Environmental Engineering, speaking at the meeting. Dr. Beyza Üstün also stated that not only Terkos, but all the streams and groundwater are under threat, "Istanbul and Thrace are in need of the watersheds and forest system here, they should not be touched."
“It does not benefit neither Istanbul nor the country”
Professor retired from the Department of Transportation. Dr. Zerrin Bayraktar reminded that the Silivri region was shown in the 'Istanbul Environmental Order' plan, which is accepted as the constitution of Istanbul for the 3rd airport. Stating that the 3rd bridge and the 3rd airport projects mean destruction for Istanbul, Bayraktar said, “We are putting something in front of us with imposing projects. It is clear that this project, which is obvious that it will not benefit both Istanbul and the country, should not be done. ”
