Tunnel of death not Izmir Metro

The death tunnel, not the Izmir Metro: Egeli Sabah reached the report prepared by METU in 2012 for the two stations to be opened at the end of this month in the Izmir Metro. The deadly dangers of the tunnel were emphasized in the report that will create a bomb effect

While İzmir Metropolitan Municipality was preparing to open the last two stations on the line in Üçyol - Üçkuyular Metro, which was started to be built in 2005, Egeli Sabah; It reached the report prepared by the contractor ÖZTAŞ, which has undertaken the rail laying works of the entire line with İzmirspor and Hatay Stations, to the Department of Civil Engineering of Middle East Technical University. The report, which has not been made public until today and is kept as a secret by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, revealed the deadly dangers that await the residents of Izmir in the tunnel, which is planned to be opened to the use of citizens in the coming days. The report, which gave goosebumps to each row, revealed that the calculations that allowed the construction of the tunnels were made incorrectly, and that water pressure and seismicity were ignored while the project was drawn.

TUNNEL 2 WAS TOWED
As a result, the subway tunnel ruptured twice in a row, first on 3 May 2011 and then on 18 July 2012. In the part of the tunnel between the Polygon and Fahrettin Altay stations, the base part where the rails will be laid was made without calculating the water pressure, so it could not resist the pressure from the bottom and broke. The part of the tunnel between the Polygon and Fahrettin Altay stations was covered with water when the structure, which is called 'isolation', which is located under the floor that rises 140 centimeters and was manufactured to protect the reinforced concrete structure from water in such constructions. The water mass, which turned the tunnel into a stream, could hardly be thrown out of the tunnel with pumps. Thus, Egeli Sabah brought to light the underlying fact that the opening of the subway was delayed many times until today, while the events were hidden from the public. The correspondence between the Contractor ÖZTAŞ firm and Metropolitan Municipality revealed that the tear in the subway tunnel said 'I am coming' but that Metropolitan did not take these warnings into consideration. When the Metropolitan did not heed the warnings of the contractor firm repeatedly on various dates, ÖZTAŞ had the METU Civil Engineering Department prepared a report on the existing and potential damages in the Izmir Metro after the events.

KOCAOĞLU NOT ATTENDED THE MEETING
The report, which is literally a harbinger of the disaster in terms of its content and the determinations made, is of vital importance in terms of life safety, Assoc. Dr. Erdem Canbay came to Izmir on 5 June 2012 to express his reservations about the tunnel. However, neither İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu nor Raif Canbek, Deputy Secretary General for Rail Systems, who was acting as the Secretary General at that time, did not attend the meeting for which an appointment was made. Upon this, Canbay penned his views. ÖZTAŞ General Manager Ahmet Öztek also sent Canbay's views on the subject to Kocaoğlu, the Rail System Department and the consulting firm STFA-Semaly SAOG on June 18, 6, through the Izmir 2012th Notary. In his opinion letter, Canbay pointed out that the report prepared by the Consultant firm STFASEMALY to the neutral Dutch company DHV focused only on hydrogeological damages, and claimed that the situation in terms of static and reinforced concrete was ignored in the report.

HOME WHY WATER PRESSURE
Canbay stated that the main reason for the collapse and damage in the tunnel is the unpredictable water pressure; He said that the reason for this was the drainage system that was not working. Underlining that the main reason why the drainage system does not work is the discontinuities of the drainage system in the tunnel cross-section changes, as Izmir Metropolitan Municipality wrote to ÖZTAŞ Construction in various articles, Assoc. Dr. Erdem Canbay continued his words as follows; “It is thought-provoking how these details were designed like this and how these projects were approved in this way. If the projects are designed uninterruptedly and continuously, how the control mechanisms allow faulty drainage on time is again a great liability. Because, as stated in the report of DHV, tunnel calculations were made according to '0' zero water pressure during the project design phase. In other words, the drainage of water is indispensable for the metro, it is a vital element.

'FAILURE TO TAKE MEASURES IS CAUSE OF MURDER'
Assoc. Dr. Canbay, the accounts of the tunnel belt is insufficient in terms of earthquake, he said

METU Civil Engineering Department Vice Chair Assoc. Dr. In the article prepared by Erdem Canbay and containing his views on tunnel construction, attention was drawn to the cracks on the tunnel. It is stated that some cracks expanded 3 millimeters in less than 0.81 months; "It is murder, so to speak, to know that such a sensitive system, where thousands of people will be transported every day, is sitting on inverters that are likely to crack at any moment and not to take any precautions." In the article, which pointed out that the earthquake loads are not taken into consideration during the engineering calculations during the projecting works of the tunnel, it was reminded that İzmir is a first degree earthquake zone. Assoc. Dr. Canbay gave the following views in the conclusion of the report “It is understood that earthquake loads are not taken in the projecting studies. The calculations made reveal that the tunnel arch is insufficient in terms of earthquakes. Reinforcement of the arch is not possible due to space constraints. " On the other hand, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality officials said that the necessary arrangements were made after the tear in the base of the subway tunnel and the trouble was eliminated.
