The electrification project of the Tehran - Mashhad Line will be financed by China: 85% of the Tehran - Mashhad Line Electrification project will be financed by China, according to the statement made by Kasım Saketi, the director of the electrification projects of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI). The remaining part will be financed by the Iranian Government's own resources.
Works on the modernization of the Tehran Mashhad line by RAI started in February 2012. With this project, the line will be transformed into a high speed train line and the journey time between the two cities will be reduced to 6 hours.
