Russian RZD halts rail purchases from foreign mills

Russian RZD has stopped buying rails from foreign manufacturers: Russian Railways (RZD) announced that it has stopped purchasing rails from foreign manufacturers as of January 2014. At the meetings held in late 2013, the RZD purchasing unit, which evaluated the rail purchase from Japanese Nippon Steel in 2014, decided not to make purchases from foreign companies. It is reported that RZD will purchase the rail from Evraz and Mechel companies.

RZD bought a large amount of Japanese-made rails during the reconstruction of Evraz ZSMK's rail and structural steel production plant. Since 2013, Evraz has been able to produce 100 meters long rails.
