It was planned to pass the tunnel under the sea, but it was understood that the tunnel would not be built on or under the seabed by the old techniques. Upon this, the tunnel was planned to be placed on the columns built under the sea.
Such ideas and ideas were further evaluated in the following 20-30 year-round and a similar design was developed in 1902. In this design, a railway tunnel under the Bosporus and placed on the seabed was envisaged.
Since then, many different ideas and ideas have been tried, new technologies have given more freedom to design.

The demand for the construction of a public transport link between the east and the west of Istanbul, passing under the Bosphorus, increased gradually in the early years of the 1980 and as a result, the first comprehensive feasibility study was carried out and reported in 1987. As a result of this study, it was determined that such a connection was technically feasible and cost effective. Today's route was chosen as the best of a series of routes.
Turkey and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a financing deal 1999. This loan agreement was the basis for the project's funding for the Istanbul Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing (Marmaray).
The construction of Marmaray, which includes the construction of the 4 station with the Bosphorus tube passage and approach tunnels, began in August of 2004. The project was planned to be put into operation in April of 2009, but due to the prolongation of the archaeological studies between Yenikapı and Sirkeci, the process has been sagging.
