Gulf railway construction will start at 2014: Construction of the railway network that will link the six Gulf countries and cost 200 billion dollars will start at the end of next year. When the 2 thousand 177 km-long railway line that will pass through United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is completed, Oman to the south of the Arabian Peninsula and Kuwait to the north will be connected.
Speaking at a conference held by Dubai-based media company MEED in Abu Dhabi, the World Bank's Gulf Cooperation Council consultant Ramiz El Esar said detailed engineering and design work would be finished by the end of this year or at the beginning of 2014, and then construction will begin.
Al Esar, after the approval of the ministers of transport and finance of the Gulf countries, said that the Gulf authority, which will be responsible for the project, was established and significant progress was made. The railway is expected to start operations at 2018.
According to the project, each country will build the railway network within its borders. It was learned that the UAE and Saudi Arabia started construction and other countries were expected to start working in the near future.
