It was announced that China, Iran and Kyrgyzstan could also participate in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway project, the foundation of which was laid last month. It is stated that the geography of the project, which started to concern all Central Asian countries closely, can expand.
According to the news in the Turkmen press, railway gained a special importance in freight transportation in the Central Asian region. While approaching the end in Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway project, the foundation of a new project was laid. Interest in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway project, which has become a strategic and economic project for the participating countries, is expected to increase. It is said that China, Iran and Kyrgyzstan may also participate in this project in the coming period.
The 400 kilometers long project is expected to be completed in 2015. The railroads of Turkmenistan will lay tracks on a certain part of the project in Afghanistan. This project will enable Central Asia to reach international markets through sea ports.
With the completion of Turkmenistan, TransAfgan and Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway projects, it will have 8 railway crossing with its neighbors (2 with Iran, 1 with Kazakhstan, 2 with Afghanistan and 3 with Uzbekistan).
Thanks to these two projects, 25 million tons of cargo will be transported from the Eurasian continent every year from China to the center of Europe, from Afghanistan to Russia. South Asian countries will gain 8 days from freight transport and will also reduce the cost of containers by up to $ 500. For this, South Asian countries India and Pakistan need to optimize their systems to take advantage of the ever-growing rail network of Central Asia.
