TCDD's opening to Africa
TCDD will export its experience to Africa through the implementation of high speed train projects, modernization of the existing system and the main objectives of the development of the advanced railway industry.
Responding positively to Ethiopia's request for assistance for the new railway line to be opened, TCDD will take active part in the restructuring of railways, training of employees and technology transfer in this country.
Ethiopian authorities ended the railway operation in 1997, and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) requested assistance from the TCDD for the restructuring of railways in the country and the operation of the railway line between the capital Addis Ababa and Djibouti.
In response to the request of the Ethiopian Railways (ERC), the TCDD sent an expert delegation to Ethiopia in April. The delegation met with the authorities and examined the construction works of the light rail system and prepared a report. The report stated that Ethiopia does not have enough experience in railway operations without railway lines and towing vehicles.
TCDD to configure railways in Ethiopia
At the meeting held in TIKA Ethiopia Office, the cooperation between TCDD and ERC was decided on 5 basis. According to the agreement, TCDD; Establish the establishment of the Ethiopian Railways and prepare the operational legislation. Technical support will be given to railway construction, inspection, monitoring, project and contract. Capacity building and training of personnel will be carried out in terms of human resources. Technical support will be provided in technology transfer. Information and experience will be shared on the management of immovables.
TCDD will also make recommendations on safety, security, institutional certification, tariff adjustment systems. Addis Ababa will prepare the operating standards of the Light Rail System.
Ethiopian railway authorities in the framework of joint work, to be found in several visits on 10-14 June in Turkey. Guests visiting TCDD technical units will exchange information by visiting YHT lines, Marmaray, TÜVASAŞ and TÜLOMSAŞ for 4 days.
