The 18-kilometer railway line between the Turkish border and Svilengrad, financed by the European Transport program, was renewed and put into service. With the completion of this project, the project became the first fully completed railway project in the country. On the railway, where the electric line has been completely renewed, the locomotives will be able to speed up to 160 km per hour. Within the framework of the project, which cost 70 million leva, a new railway bridge was built over the Meriç river.
The railway bridge with a total length of 433 meters and a height of 7 meters is also the longest railway bridge in the country. Prime Minister Marin Raykov and Minister of Transport Kristian Kristev inaugurated the renewed railway line. Officials from Turkey also attended the opening. Prime Minister Raykov expressed his satisfaction with the renewal of the line, which has not been renewed for 43 years, and thanked everyone who contributed to the first completed railway project. Transport Minister Kristev, on the other hand, said that thanks to such successful projects, Bulgaria can confidently ask for more resources for the purchase of new locomotives and wagons in the new term European financing program.
Thanks to the project, which was completed in about 3 years by the Czech company OHL ZS, it is foreseen to reduce railway infrastructure maintenance costs, to ensure safe transportation and to reduce environmental pollution by replacing diesel locomotives with electric wagons. The completed line forms part of the Plovdiv Svlengrad Turkish border line. Last year, the Plovdiv-Dimitrovgrad route of the route was completed.
