Current Situation in Izmir Harbor Rehabilitation Project

An informative meeting was held at the Historical Air Gas Factory regarding the İzmir Port Rehabilitation Project, which is planned to be held in partnership with İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and TCDD General Directorate.
In his speech, TCDD General Manager Süleyman Karaman stated that they took action with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in order to improve the Izmir Port in 2010 by the instructions of the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications. He stated that he could not come close to, and that the city lost 2 billion dollars from this.
Explaining that as TCDD, they are carrying out the works in the port section of the project and the municipality is interested in ensuring water circulation, Karaman said, “We expanded the container terminal, solved the viaduct problem and prepared the plans. We aim both the passenger and freight ports to work together efficiently. ”
Karaman pointed out that it is very important for the 2nd and 3rd generation ships to approach the port and stated that they have signed a protocol with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality within the scope of the project and are ready to do the necessary work for the expansion of the Izmir Port and the cleaning of the gulf.
- Studies on the EIA process
Süleyman Karaman reminded that the Yüksel Project Company managed the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Certificate process, which includes the decisions regarding the area where the material that will come out during the cleaning of the gulf will be unloaded.
Expressing that the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization has given the EIA special format for the Izmir Port Rehabilitation Project, Karaman stated that the necessary report will be prepared within 2-3 months and when the EIA process is completed, they will take the investment into the program of the Ministry of Development.
Noting that TCDD has spent 60 million dollars to improve the port and the total cost of the project is 300 million dollars, Karaman said, “The 2nd and 3rd generation ships cannot approach the port because no improvement has been made. Loss of İzmir from this is 4 billion dollars ”.
- “The Gulf will be saved” -
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu said that the first condition for the city to become a trade center in the world is "expansion of the port".
Aziz Kocaoglu stated that the depth of the sea was reduced to 17 meters in the harbor area, and said:
“There are 2 materials here. These are first-class brick soil and sand. So there is no pollution, there is salt. This is a material that will be washed out and evaluated very quickly. There is no heavy metal. Experts will decide on the use of this material. The gulf will be saved. We do not do business to destroy nature. This is a must. The rehabilitation project is the project that will crown İzmir in the world. We want to swim our children in the bay. When it comes to money, there is no problem for money for 9 years. As long as the EIA is out, let's start working. ”
Yüksel Project Company Project Manager Işıkhan Güler stated that no hazardous waste was found during the screenings carried out in the bay, and the material to be released could be used in the İZSU Treatment Plant land in Çiğli.
