ANADOLU EXPRESSION: A door opening to lonely night between Ankara and Istanbul

“They traveled on good and bad trains. The lights were off when they stopped at a station on a train. Sometimes they were waiting for the train coming from the opposite direction in the dark for hours ... They would settle for everything. They were ashamed to tell the young journalist that they had no address. Whereas, they could show the train as an address. How did they not think of it? Just as a person meets a house, when he leaves his new address in his old house, it is so… ”(Unable to hold, 715-6) When I won the university in 1996, I was on the east of my hometown - which is beyond Yalova for an Istanbulite, I made my first journey by train. This night journey, where we met the same university together - and on our own, and that we met again in London in the same desolation, and with a friend from the neighborhood, was actually the beginning of some kind of homelessness. We would have grasped years later. Because of this, we did not think that we could show the night trains we used as an address while we were moving from one house to another during our student years.

These journeys had some details to be cared for. According to an experience stolen from our past experiences, night trains would be very hot in winter and very cool in summer. And he was firmly encouraged and justified with a strong belief that the country would not have changed in some matters despite the time elapsed. A thin underwear in winter and a spring jacket in summer have always kept their place in our bags as indispensable for these journeys. These journeys, along with all the other details, would leave a sediment reminiscent of mysterious rites. When the train departed from Ankara in the dark of the night, it was as if a door was closed, a chat square was set up in a place where time did not flow, and it would go to Istanbul in the first lights of the day when it received the secret of life from our troubled homelessness. Kadıköy-Karaköy ferry expedition or walks between Kızılay and Gar were preparatory ceremonies for this journey on the threshold. In every journey, a person became more mature about the state of homelessness and learned to persevere.

I stayed in Ankara for ten years because of this trip and I always tried to get out on a night train between Ankara and Istanbul. Anadolu Ekspresi was the preference of our small congregation in pursuit of the same sediment. The train at 22.00 was more expensive than the East Express, which is cheaper and cheaper - indeed, the fact that we bought the 18 hour between Ankara and Istanbul is a matter of fact. On the other hand, the Fatih Express, which departed at the 23.30 was overly fussy lı Both, how to say now, was the work of a little more middle-class roads. For, they were willing to fall asleep as soon as they got on the train, for a moment and to come to Istanbul before us - and of course they were willing to pay the difference of this luxury. After we leave our bags, we will spend the most part of the journey, we will spend most of the journey.

It seems as if there was an implicit contract between our homeless community that appeared on the verge of a night cruise and other travelers. Some of our sad and cheerful situations that they may not tolerate in their stationary lives were drawn to the most with the frowning eyebrows shadowed by a smuggling smile. After all, we all knew that one night on the train, it would open a strange space free of institutional arrangements. Sometimes we coincide with the primary school friend of a teacher who we hesitated, and we used to get a glass of cognac, and sometimes we were welcomed by our friends from Eskişehir. Sometimes ...

In this country, I felt most at home in the Anatolian Express boat. Therefore, after a year of separation from the 6 again in a state of homelessness in Ankara (k) return to me the most debilitated these days I have been deprived of these journeys. Our timeless-space is the victim of all those who hear a terrible aesthetic appetite for the fastest of all kinds of mechanics. Were we all the travelers of the day, the distance between Ankara and Istanbul shorter than one night?

But maybe… Sometimes it is a dream or all we suffer… Now, while looking through a train window that is not already there…
