Tokyo Metro Map

The Tokyo subway is a subway network located in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan. The Tokyo subway was opened on December 30, 1927 and is Asia's first subway system. The system is 304.1 km long and has 13 lines and 285 stations. It is operated by two companies, Tokyo Subway and Toei Subway.

The Tokyo subway serves Tokyo and the Greater Tokyo Metropolis, and while the subway system itself is mostly within the city centre, it also covers much larger areas via commuter rail services.

Construction of the Tokyo subway began on August 20, 1920, with the establishment of the Tokyo Underground Railway Company. On October 30, 1927, the first line was opened between Asakusa and Ueno and was 2.2 km long.

As a result of the sarin gas attack carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo organization in the subway on March 20, 1995, 13 people lost their lives and more than 5000 were injured.

On April 1, 2004, the Teito Rapid Transit Authority was privatized and renamed Tokyo Metro.

Tokyo has two main subway operators:

Tokyo Subway. Formerly known as the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (TRTA), it was privatized in 2004. It is 195.1 km long and has nine lines and 179 stations.

Toei subway. It is operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Transportation Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It is 109.0 km long and has four lines and 99 stations.
