The catenary system is an overhead line system in which the energy required for the operation of the trains is transported from different transformer centers with different transport mechanisms. The train takes the energy from the catenary through the pantograph. The current completes its circuit through the rails and return cables.

The catenary system offers solutions for the power supply of 600 V DC, 750 V DC, 1500 V DC, 3000 V DC, 15 kV AC (16,7 Hz), and 25 kV AC (50 Hz)

The catenary system 2 is divided into main headings;

  • Conventional Catenary System (Overhead Line)
  • Rigid Catenary System

1. Conventional Catenary System (Overhead Line)

The air line catenary system is of two types;

- Automatic tensioned catenary system (ATCS)
- Fixed tension catenary system (FTTW)

Automatic tension catenary system is used in subway and light rail system lines where maximum speeds up to 100 km / h are performed. In fixed tensioner catenary system, in tram lines where the maximum operating speed is 40 km / h, places requiring low speed such as garage roads, maintenance roads used.

In the Conventional Catenary System, carrier wire, contact wire, insulator, pendulum, jumper cables (jumper, dropper), conductor tensioning devices (weights), pole, console, hob, connection parts, etc. are used. used.

2. Rigid Catenary System

The conventional catenary system and 3 with the developing rail system technology in recent years. As an alternative to rail system, light, maintenance and high conductivity rigid catenary system is used.

One of the biggest advantages of this system is that it can be easily used in the same line with conventional catenary systems. Although there are different profiles in the market, it generally consists of an aluminum composite profile given as follows and a contact wire attached to it. The rigid catenary system, which allows the construction of smaller tunnels in order to facilitate the isolation, is used in the subways.
