Transportation Marine and Communications Minister Binali Yıldırım said that İzmir Port will host the 3rd generation giant passenger ships with the 'Gulf Transformation Project' that will clear Izmir Bay from mud and debris.

Yıldırım stated that the 'Gulf Transformation Project', which they designed to restore Izmir Bay to its old days, was initiated in cooperation with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and TCDD, which operates the Izmir Port.

Yıldırım noted that a deep dredging will be carried out in the stream mouths pouring into the Izmir Bay with the project, and the water flow will be improved by increasing the flow rate through a channel to be opened on the northern axis of the bay, and İzmir Port II. He stated that the construction of the Section Container Terminal will be carried out in parallel with the project in question.

Yildirim said the project preparations were planned to be completed by the end of the summer:

”We are planning to launch the tender for Izmir Port Approach Channel Scanning by TCDD as of the end of 2012. Within the scope of the project, we will begin deepening the area between Alsancak Port and Yeni Kale. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will buy the ships required for this work to TCDD. İzmir Water and Sewerage Administration (İZSU) within the Metropolitan Municipality Karşıyaka and the mud and grains that accumulate from the stream beds off Bostanlı to the inner gulf and the ruins in Ragıp Pasha Dalyan off the Tuzla offshore. ”

Yıldırım stated that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has made the tender of the dredging vessel to be taken for the purpose of providing water circulation, and within this scope, 3 million 463 thousand investments will be made for the tugboat and 5 million 850 thousand TL for the cutter-absorbent dredging vessel.

DEPTH 16-18 WILL BE OUT OF METER

Yildirim said that the depth of the 12-16 meters would be increased by the corridors that will be opened between Yenikale and Alsancak Port with the vessels that can make the bottom scan with the latest technology.

Yıldırım pointed out that the project, which will be carried out with the giant partnership of TCDD and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, will be completed after a 2-year period, and the functionality of İzmir Port will increase as well:

”Thanks to the deepening in the bay, İzmir Port will be opened to third generation giant passenger ships. The inner bay, which is filled with a little more and more due to the low flow and the mud and water dragged by the stream beds, and therefore losing its mobility, will regain its old life days thanks to the improvement works to be implemented. We will restore the sea of Izmir to its former beauty.

After the work to be carried out, the ships that could not enter the bay will have been opened because there is not enough depth. Exporters, who are faced with extra cost burden, will get rid of this burden as giant ships can approach the Piraeus Port of Greece instead of Alsancak Port. ”
