Nükhet Işıkoğlu: Istanbul Railway Museum

Istanbul Railway Museum

The historical Sirkeci Station, located in the district of Eminönü in Istanbul, was the starting point of the suburban trains I landed a few stops before I visited the late Güzin aunt who lived in Samatya until a few years ago. In the evening turns, I was a little bit scared when I hugged my bag more tightly, and I had the opportunity to make a train ride with a short melody of the taps that the train made while going.

As I walked by jogging to catch the train that was about to get up, I realized the beauty of the architectural structure I was in, I would have thought of visiting and exploring the garage with an orientalist architecture. The fact that Sirkeci Gar is not within my daily routine routinely put me off this idea. But after I learned that there is a railway museum, I decided that I should go and see it as soon as possible.

Before I write my impressions about the Istanbul Railway Museum, I would like to briefly describe the Sirkeci station building in which the museum is located.

The foundation of Sirkeci Gar, the gateway of Istanbul to Europe, was laid with a big ceremony on 11 February 1888 Day and opened in 3 November 1890. The architect of the Sirkeci station building, German A.Jasmund, had a particular focus on preparing the project. Istanbul was the place where the west ended and the east began, in other words, the point where the East and the West met. For this reason, the building should be implemented in an orientalist style, and regional and national forms and patterns should be included. In order to reflect this style, brick bands were used on the facades, windows with pointed arches, and a wide entrance door reminiscent of the Seljuk period stone gates, and the style was completed with stained glass.

The state of the Sirkeci Station was very splendid in the first years. The sea came up to the skirts of the building and landed into the sea in the terraces.

The construction of the railroad at Yedikule, when it came to Yenikapı, led to long debates and the line reached Sirkeci by the permission of Abdülaziz.

The tugra, which does not exist today, is located on the Gar's large gate, but it is printed on this kıt by Muhtar Efendi.

Now there is a small railway museum inside this historic and stately gar building. Don't look at me. Each piece of railways that we own is small, but it is a square meter. Once inside, you realize once again the importance of TCDD's corporate culture, its roots and how important and essential the railroad is for the state and the nation.

The Istanbul Railway Museum was founded in an 150 m2 area within the station building.

The museum's unassuming, glazed door with a creaky view of the unexpectedly you encounter. 1955 electric trains in Sirkeci 8027 opened the first train used in the train section of the electric suburban train .. So the train's mechanic cabin .. According to what I have learned, especially children who visited the museum, they touch, the train was thought with the idea of love.

One of the objects that greet you at the entrance of the museum is the photo of our Ata, which is known by many of us, in a train window. A verse of Cahit Külebi was written; "The train ride by browsing, we remember you ..." Indeed, given the importance and priority to railways Ataturk in the early years of our Republic then adopted our young people in every corner of Turkey, almost rail is fitted with a spirit of mobilization.

Due to the fact that the museum is located in the Istanbul Gar and the space is small, it has been mostly included in the Rumeli railroads and the objects and documents of the Thrace line.

Station location plans, maps, watches belonging to the Rumeli railroads built during the imperial period, objects belonging to the Trakya line, which were purchased in 1937 and included in the national railway network, photographs and belongings of railway schools and hospitals that are now closed are located in the museum.

One of the objects that particularly impressed me was the telegraph machine. The telegraph message was written on the plate next to the telegram indicating that the Great Offensive started. . Lam ..Garp fronts (war) began operations on our front. At this moment, all the nation recognizes our armies and our self-sacrificing pianists, the only Muini victory after God. Millet We commemorate the accomplishments of our railwaymen in the achievement of our liberation war.

Founder of the National Railway and the first General Manager of the State Railways, Behiç Erkin, started to work on the establishment of the museums of the railways to protect the iç precious memories of our railway Genel and transfer it to the next generations.

The movement ruler signed by Atatürk, the silver souvenir medallion that Orient Ekspres gave to its passengers on the last trip, the silver sets of Orient Ekspres and the items used by the railwaymen are the other valuable objects in the museum. Lighting tools, loko manufacturing plates, ticket cabinets with 1939, typewriters, calculators, 19.yy station bell of the Anatolian railway company, tile stove that warms the waiting hall of Sirkeci Garage, French tile glass tiles of Yedikule cer atelier can be seen in the museum.

I'm particularly interested in the chestnut flares that look like a watch. There are also warning signs in the wagon that I can not pass without mentioning. To give an example, bil Tobacco is satisfied with drinking dat, girmek Cigarettes and matches are nice to throw out a, ekk Qatar at the station during the reluctance to enter the tender is like. . Pull the ring only in case of danger. Sui will be violently pursued for those who use sui. Su

The cabinets and tables used as exhibition stands in the museum are the manual labor of the workers working in the railway workshops. Last year, 28.209 native and 30.064 foreigners visited 58.273.

The sentient writings in the Museum's Guestbook are proof of how much the train is loved in our society. The memories of the history of the railways are our industrial heritage. To love railways, to develop railways in our country, to do studies on this subject, to the future generations, to lay the foundations of a solid future for our children.

I would like to thank all those who contributed to the formation of the Istanbul Railway Museum and I would especially recommend to see them. And I want to share with you the beautiful verses written by the workers on the wall of the Yedikule Cer Atelier, unfortunately there is no trace of it;
