Istanbul Railway Museum

The historical Sirkeci Station, located in the district of Eminönü in Istanbul, was the starting point of the suburban trains I landed a few stops before I visited the late Güzin aunt who lived in Samatya until a few years ago. But after I learned that there is a railway museum, I decided that I should go and see it as soon as possible.

Before I write my impressions about the Istanbul Railway Museum, I would like to briefly describe the Sirkeci station building in which the museum is located.

The foundation of Sirkeci Gar, the gateway of Istanbul to Europe, was laid with a big ceremony on 11 February 1888 Day and opened in 3 November 1890. The architect of the Sirkeci station building, German A.Jasmund, had a particular focus on preparing the project. Istanbul was the place where the west ended and the east began, in other words, the point where the East and the West met. For this reason, the building should be implemented in an orientalist style, and regional and national forms and patterns should be included. In order to reflect this style, brick bands were used on the facades, windows with pointed arches, and a wide entrance door reminiscent of the Seljuk period stone gates, and the style was completed with stained glass.

The state of the Sirkeci Station was very splendid in the first years. The sea came up to the skirts of the building and landed into the sea in the terraces.

The construction of the railroad at Yedikule, when it came to Yenikapı, led to long debates and the line reached Sirkeci by the permission of Abdülaziz.

The tugra, which does not exist today, is located on the Gar's large gate, but it is printed on this kıt by Muhtar Efendi.

The Istanbul Railway Museum was founded in an 150 m2 area within the station building.

The museum's unassuming, glazed door with a creaky view of the unexpectedly you encounter. 1955 electric trains in Sirkeci 8027 opened the first train used in the train section of the electric suburban train .. One of the objects that greet you at the entrance of the museum is the photo of our Ata, which is known by many of us, in a train window. Station location plans, maps, watches belonging to the Rumeli railroads built during the imperial period, objects belonging to the Trakya line, which were purchased in 1937 and included in the national railway network, photographs and belongings of railway schools and hospitals that are now closed are located in the museum.

One of the objects that particularly impressed me was the telegraph machine. The telegraph message was written on the plate next to the telegram indicating that the Great Offensive started. .
