US Rail Freight Volume Down Five Percent

In the week ending February 25, 2012 in the USA, the volume of transportation by rail decreased by 5.0 percent. According to the data released by the US Railroad Association (AAR), freight traffic, which was 296 thousand 319 wagons in the same week of last year, became 281 thousand 644 wagons in the same week this year. On a weekly basis, container volume decreased by 1.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and became 184 thousand 703, while trailer volume was 9.9 percent.

With this decrease, it came to 29 thousand 699. Thus, the volume of Intermodal transportation decreased by 2.8 percent to 214 thousand 402. The estimated amount of freight transported by rail decreased by 3.9 percent to 32.2 billion tons.
