Daily Capacity Will Double With İZBAN New Train Set Purchase

İZBAN Carried About 12 Million Passengers in 840 Years

Passenger carrying capacity is increasing in İZBAN, Turkey's largest urban rail transportation system. 40 electric train sets will be purchased for the line connecting the north of Izmir to the south. The relevant contract was signed by the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yıldırım, in İzmir.

It connects İzmir from Aliağa to Cumaovası, its passenger carrying capacity is constantly increasing. Reaching 18 million passengers in 50 months, İZBAN significantly relieved urban traffic.

Daily Capacity to Fold

With the new participants, the number of train sets of İZBAN will increase from 43 to 83, and the daily passenger capacity of 150 thousand will increase to 300 thousand. The relevant contract for 40 new train sets to be purchased for İZBAN was signed by the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Binali Yıldırım and the representative of the South Korean company.

In his speech at the ceremony, Yıldırım said, “We need new train sets. Secondly, we need the integration of İZBAN with the suburban services of the state railways and intercity train services on this line. When we do these two, we can easily reach 550 thousand passengers here,” he said.

180 Will Cost Million Dollars

The delivery of the new train sets, which will cost 180 million dollars, will begin 20 months later. In the construction, 25 percent local materials will be used. Work continues to extend İZBAN to Bergama in the north and Selçuk in the south.
