İzmir Metropolitan Municipality concluded the tender for the Balçova cable car which will be renewed completely by the European Union standards.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality determined the first and second company in the construction and project tender that was carried out for the renewal of Balçova Cable Car Facilities, which was determined to be “inconvenient to use” in the technical examination conducted in accordance with the “EU standards”. The decision taken by the tender commission was notified to the participating companies. After the completion of the legal process, the contractor will be invited to the contract and the contract will be signed. It was stated in the tender that the most economically appropriate proposal was evaluated and a decision was taken.

The contract will start after signing the site and the works planned to be completed within 300 days, this icon structure of the city will be completely renewed and presented to the service of the people of İzmir in a much safer and more modern way. The new ropeway has a carrying capacity of 1200 people per hour. Cabins will be 8 people each.

The previous construction and project tender was canceled because the contractor firm could not complete the necessary documents for signing the contract.

How did the process work?

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality had a technical examination at the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers with the thought that Balçova Cable Car Facilities, which was established in 1974, has been worn out for many years. In the report prepared at the end of this review, it was stated that the use of the facility was 'objectionable' and should be improved.

Evaluating the said report, the Metropolitan Municipality of Izmir closed the facilities at the beginning of 2008 to make improvements on the carrier rope, pulley sets, carrier gondola and terminal posts by working on the preliminary project and technical specifications related to the mechanical parts.

The facility, which is planned to be allocated to the 5-6 pension and is planned to be improved within this period, has been awaiting ğ waiting N for the 2009 to receive information on the implementation of the new regulation in EU norms.

The tender process was also initiated after the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union and the Ministry of Industry and Trade were imposed on the implementation of the “Wired Transport System Regulations Designed to Carry People”. However, the construction and project tender, which was held in a short time, was canceled because the contractor could not complete the documents required for the signing of the contract. Now, the commission has decided on the new tender and the contract phase has been reached.

Under-picture: It has been working since 1974: The Balçova Cable Car, which is “inconvenient to use in technical examination”, will be renewed “from beginning to end” by the Metropolitan Municipality.
