Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yıldırım, stated that with the introduction of EGERAY (İZBAN), Izmirians love the train journey and said, “The number of passengers carried by EGERAY has approached 50 million. We will reduce the transportation difficulties of the city even more by launching new railway lines in Izmir. ” Minister Yıldırım said that the proposals received for the Izmir-Ankara High Speed Train Line project are in the evaluation phase.
Yıldırım drew attention to the fact that İzmir is a city of sea as well as a city of railways, and reminded that Turkey first met railways in İzmir. Emphasizing that İzmir is in the brightest and most privileged pages of Turkey’s 151-year railway history, Yıldırım said that it maintains this feature with EGERAY, Turkey’s most modern and longest urban rail transport system. Expressing that EGERAY connects İzmir from north to south by railway by working on İzmir Aliağa Menderes line, which causes traffic problems in İzmir, Yıldırım said, “Our fellow citizens of İzmir also loved EGERAY, which carried its first passenger on August 30, 2010. The number of passengers carried by EGERAY has approached 1.5 million in 50 years.”
