3. Is the Bridge Really Necessary?

Boğaziçi University Civil Engineering Faculty Member Prof.Dr. Semih Tezcan's article on the 3rd Bridge.

The Boğazray Tüpgeçit Project can only be built by Turkish contractors, with a sixth of the third bridge cost and part time of the 3rd bridge, without the need for a foreign currency. It will not harm the environment, and it will cure Istanbul's traffic problem like a scalpel.

In all newspapers dated January 12, 2012, there were news that no domestic and foreign companies participated in the third bridge tender. It is evident that it is clear that the 3rd bridge has no technical, scientific and economic feasibility, it is a dead-end street, it cannot be built with the build-operate-transfer model despite the protective state support put in the tender file.

The reasons for the need for the 3rd bridge by the government officials are explained below with the reasons for the lack of accuracy and much more effective and much cheaper transportation infrastructure alternatives than the 3rd bridge. Meanwhile, a rail tube passage (Boğazray Project) to be built between Söğütlüçeşme - 3. Levent, which is one-sixth of the third bridge cost of $ 6 billion, will create a public transportation miracle to relieve the Bosphorus bridges for at least 1 years. was introduced.

Bridge reasons

Mr. Prime Minister is a leader who finishes work and leaves work. When he believes in the accuracy of a project, he overcomes the obstacles and walks. True! He believes in the correctness of the third bridge, which is why he wants to end this task with his strong belief! According to him, the third bridge is the right decision. Because the existing two bridges, 400 thousand per day, 130 million vehicles per year since the 2000 has been saturated above their capacity. In particular, intercity heavy vehicles are paralyzing city traffic.

Therefore, according to the Prime Minister's foresight and belief, the most rational and only thing to do to solve these problems is to build a third bridge that will help the two bridges that are clogged. The diagnosis is correct, but unfortunately the method of treatment is incorrect.

The sons of this country will give, give and receive great efforts and losses in order to clear the damages of the wrong construction decisions and practices taken and to be taken for Istanbul!

Want an example? Here is the cargo port, warehouse and warehouses of Salıpazarı built with great hopes! Abandon remains useless. Here are the famous Italian urbanists who built industrial facilities on both sides of the Golden Horn! Four years of Mr. Dalan and 6 billion dollars of the country were spent until he saved the Golden Horn from this mess. Here, unplanned, unlicensed, illegal and distorted urbanization in Istanbul where more than 60 percent of the population live. Aren't we trying to fix this distorted building with "transformation" projects? Will our life always pass with jigsaw puzzles? The idea of the third bridge is wrong, not once, a hundred thousand times.

Bosphorus Project

The third bridge is not a solution to Istanbul's traffic jams, saturated Bosphorus crossings. However, the bridges are clogged. Our people are tortured almost in the morning and in the evening. Since our people (about one million passengers every day) lose at least one hour in traffic jams in the morning and evening, the country's economy is damaged by 4.5 billion dollars a year due to reasons such as labor loss, fuel loss and wear. Undoubtedly, it is necessary to eliminate this suffering of our people and the important damage that our economy suffers.

The solution for this is not the 3rd bridge, but the Boğazray Tüpgeçit Project, which will be built between Söğütlüçeşme and 4. Levent on the busiest transportation axis of Istanbul. The third bridge is a 'faced circle' (vicious circle) in terms of transportation infrastructure preference. Here is the proof!

The annual growth rate of car ownership in Istanbul is 16 percent, a record in the world. Let's consider the rate of increase in the need for bridge crossing as 7 percent per year with a conservative estimate.

Since the number of crossings from the bridges is 2000 million in 130, after twenty years the need to switch in 2020 will be about 7 million with the rate of increase of 530 per year.

The annual vehicle transit capacity of a bridge is 65 million. Therefore, in 2020 we need 8 bridges. There are two of them. So we have to build at least 2020 more bridges by 6 to meet population and car growth. In short, a new bridge is needed every two years… Does it depend on life? This business is not a simple circle, what is it? So, as soon as you think you have found a solution, you come to the nose with the same problem.

Proposal

The most realistic, most effective and definitive solution is the Boğazray Tüpgeçit Project mentioned above. The Boğazray Tüpgeçit Project has 14 important advantages compared to the third bridge. If Boğazray Tüpgeçidi is built, it will carry 1.5 million passengers a day, reducing the number of passenger cars in existing bridges to less than half, and perhaps a new bridge will not be needed for more than fifty years.

The Boğazray Tüpgeçit Project can only be built by Turkish contractors, with a sixth of the third bridge cost and part time of the 3rd bridge, without the need for a foreign currency. It will not harm the environment, and it will cure Istanbul's traffic problem like a scalpel.
