Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, 48 in the west and east direction of the airport and 19 May to extend the route of the existing light rail system has been opened to consult the route draft.

The project draft prepared by the Metropolitan Municipality regarding the extension of the light rail system operating between the city center and Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) by an additional 19 kilometers in the west direction to the 48 Mayıs district and in the east direction to Samsun-Çeşamba Airport. It was discussed at the meeting attended by council members. Stating that the draft was shared with the aim of discussing the draft of the project and meeting at a common point, the Secretary General of the Metropolitan Municipality, Kenan Sara, said that the air is 22 kilometers away from the Gar Interchange, and that the line will reach the airport following the industrial section and the new Congress and Culture Center to be built.

Expressing that the line was determined by taking into account the new construction, industrial zone and the locations of Tekkeköy district, Şara emphasized that changes can be made in the route in line with future demands. Stating that the route in the western part will pass from the last stop of the university to the opposite lane, and go to the 19 Mayıs Police Vocational School, and that the route up to the 19 Mayıs district will be evaluated with a joint study, Şara argued that there will be works such as expropriation and zoning changes in Atakum, and that the city should be ready for this.

Shara, who made a statement with the questions of the participants, answered the suggestions that the system should go to the bus station. Sara said, “In the future, airports will become more crowded. Passenger transportation at the bus station will be minimized. There are studies to build a high-speed train. High-speed train construction is planned from Samsun to Istanbul. Citizens will choose the train that goes at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The bus station potential will decrease. Fortunately, we sold the bus station and survived. If we sell it now, it will not cost a quarter of the price," he said.

Explaining that the construction of a metrobus instead of the rail system would be a short-term solution and low in cost, Şara emphasized that this issue is among the alternatives, but that the arrangements for both lines must be made ready for the future in the projects. Responding to the criticism that the rail system did not reach the university, Sara said, “The rail system had a slope problem. It cannot go beyond a certain slope. The university is on a steep spot. If I were a university administrator, I would not introduce the rail system to the university anyway. Because it destroys vehicles with tires,” he said. The meeting, attended by Atakum Mayor Metin Burma and Tekkeköy Mayor Hayati Tekin, passed in a positive atmosphere and the problem of dolmuş drivers was also discussed.
