The Wall of Galata Tower, which was destroyed, was Rebuilt Again!

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Department of Cultural Heritage filed a criminal complaint to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Istanbul Number II Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage for the restoration work that started without an approved restoration project in the Galata Tower, which was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on 13 May with the Presidential decree. .

In the petition stating that a restoration project approved by the General Directorate of Foundations is required for the restoration, it said, “In contradiction with the decisions taken by the Regional Conservation Boards, the immovable cultural and natural properties and protected areas and protected areas cannot be intervened, re-used or changed. Major repairs, construction, installation, drilling, partial or total demolition, burning, excavation or similar works are considered as constructional and physical intervention ”.

The petition drew attention to the fact that the original bearing walls were destroyed by the use of hilti and construction equipment and the original material was broken into pieces. Also, considering the height of Galata Tower; Demolition is carried out at the ground level, where the vertical load of the load-bearing wall is the highest and is the most difficult area in terms of earthquake force. Therefore, the intervention is an application that will directly affect the carrier of the building ”.

In the petition, it was also pointed out that the IMM Teams, who went to Galata Tower to investigate when the event was seen on social media, were not taken into the tower by the contractor company officials.

On the other hand, it was determined that the wall in Galata Tower, which was destroyed yesterday, was rebuilt in a hurry. IMM KUDEB and IMM Police teams went to the historical Tower today and made examinations about the work carried out.
